Robyn’s Spring Gardening Maintenance Tips

With winter’s chill thawing out as the seasons change, now is the perfect time to get your garden ready to enjoy spring. Here is a quick checklist to get the most out of spring for your garden.

1. Get the right equipment for the job

Before you get stuck into your garden, take a moment to check if you have the necessary gear for what you have planned.

Having the right tools on hand such as the Stanley Power Pruner Kit or the Makita Hedge Trimmer will help get those laborious jobs done quickly.

2. Remove all weeds

It’s not uncommon for some broadleaf weeds like bindii and thistle to take root in your garden and lawn during winter, so now is the perfect time to tackle those nuisances before they become more of a problem.

Weed killers like YatesWeed ‘n’ Feed are designed to eradicate most common broadleaf weeds in your garden. Not requiring any mixing, all you need to do is attach YatesWeed ‘n’ Feed to your hose and spray.

Taking out weeds from your garden bed will help your new plants, ensuring they’re not competing for nutrients.

3. Prepare your garden bed

With all the weeds removed, it's best to prepare your garden bed with a good watering and quality organic compost to ensure any new plants will have the best chance of thriving.

Composts like All Purpose Potting Mix are great sources of nutrients that will enhance your new plant's growth.

4. Prune and trim established plants

Winter’s colder weather will often result in withered leaves, bulbs and branches. Trimming and pruning these affected parts will encourage new growth resulting in healthier and fuller plants with more flowers.

5. Time to plant new plants

With the weeds removed and the soil ready, now is the time to get those new plants into the garden.

When planting new plants, it’s important to give them enough room to grow comfortably. This will stop you from overplanting and having to rip them out.

If you want to give your new plants a leg up after you’ve planted them, giving them a good dose of fertiliser like Chicken or Cow Manure will provide much-needed nutrients for your new plants.
